Today I stopped by my local morning show, Good Day Rochester, to talk with Alexis and Jennifer about semi-homemade desserts and how easy it is to transform store bought sweets into amazing creations everyone will love. You know I am all about making it pretty and tasty without spending hours in the kitchen.
See below the ideas I presented and watch the TV segment HERE.
The three ideas below use store-bought items that with just a few easy steps anyone could take them from simple to masterpieces worthy of any celebration. They are Easter themed but by switching some of the colors or candy used as toppings, they will be perfect for any special occasion like birthdays, baby showers, Mother’s Day or any holiday throughout the year.
I found inspiration for these cakes on Pinterest. If you are not following me there make sure you do here as I am always looking for great ideas for you. Here is my Easter Pinterest board where I’ved pinned these ideas.
To start, here is your good ole grocery store sheet cake. I used green food coloring to dye coconut flakes, which you can do so by simply adding a few drops of food coloring in a plastic bag, a drizzle of water, and the coconut flakes. Shake it all until the flakes are covered in your desired color.
Sprinkle the top of the cake with the coconut flakes and the frosting will hold it together. To complete the Easter look, I used marshmallow bunnies that with the help of a toothpick we can stand on the cake. You can finish it up with sugar flowers, jelly beans, or colorful sprinkles and the plain white cake will be Easter ready.
For this second idea, I am using a round cake. I used a more fancy butter cream cake but this shows you that you can still bring it up a notch by simply following a few handy tips. I used hazelnut and chocolate cream filled wafer sticks to form the look of a basket, and you can do so by cutting them to your desired length and adhering them to the cake with its frosting. The frosting will act as a glue but we can secure them once more with the help of a ribbon that will give the “basket” that cute Easter look. We will then fill the top with chocolate Easter eggs, my favorite this season.
Finally for those that are looking for a more fresh option, utilizing fruits is the way to go. Here we have a previously thawed frozen pound cake which I have cut in half and filled with instant vanilla pudding and berries, do the same for the top and you will have a gorgeous tiered naked cake. The last touch will be powder sugar and you can garnish it with mint as well.
As you can see making your cake look professional and impressive doesn’t have to be as hard as you think. They use ingredients that are readily available at the grocery store and these are easy techniques that anyone could try at home and that won’t break the bank. Enjoy!
